PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project involved the assessment of the capacity existing local and strategic roads, drainage and services infrastructure and the master-planning of new infrastructure to support the long-term development of Shannon Free Zone West (124ha) and Shannon Free Zone East (118ha). The proposal for Shannon Free Zone West which is currently built out to c.80% is one of regeneration to provide modern commercial and engineering spaces within a high quality landscaped environment. The proposal for Shannon Free Zone East which is currently built out to c.25% is to optimise the development potential of the site for the coming years.
PROJECT COMPLEXITIES
The key challenges relate mainly to the Shannon Free Zone East site. The site topography is varied; the site is well below the exit ramp off the N18; and existing entrances to the site do not create a sense of arrival. The main central open space has workers, cyclists and pedestrians to the fore and diverts vehicular traffic around the perimeter of the site. A collaborative approach was taken to sustainability, with the upgrading existing watercourses and the provision of new attenuation features incorporated as part of the landscape plans to provide for an aesthetically pleasing business park.
