Saturday, 12th December 2020 – Liberty Insurance All-Ireland Senior Championship Final – Kilkenny vs. Galway – Croke Park
Malone O’Regan Mechanical Engineer by day to All Ireland Senior Camogie Champion on a winters night in December Denise Gaule modestly credited the newcomers on the team as key to Kilkenny’s victory after the final whistle. She refused to be drawn on the fact that her 1 – 06 on the night drove Kilkenny on to victory or that she was involved in almost every Kilkenny score in a nail biting second half. Three key moments stood out in that period, first an inspirational catch and long range point midway through the half, followed by a mazy run through the Galway defence which caused panic and drew a foul resulting in a penalty. With the teams level and only 3 minutes left on the clock Denise showed nerves of steel to pick herself off the ground and take the penalty herself. After some delay Denise buried the sliotar in the corner, giving the goalkeeper no chance, to put Kilkenny within touching distance of a first All-Ireland since 2016. They duly closed the match out and following 3 years of final heartache the outpouring of joy at the final whistle warmed the cold night. All of the Malone O’Regan team are delighted for Denise and wish her the heartiest of congratulations on her and Kilkenny Camogie’s 2020 success.
