Extension to A&E at University Hospital Waterford Malone O’Regan are proud to have acted as Project Managers, Civil, Structural, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers for the fast track delivery of an Emergency Works project at the A&E Department at UHW for the HSE. Faced with significant challenges at the entrance to the A&E Department at the Hospital due to Covid-19 and the need to screen arrivals, Malone O’Regan worked with the HSE and RKD Architects to develop an arrangement which would facilitate socially distanced queueing. A layout was developed which could be constructed in a constrained area between the existing A&E Lobby and the entrance to the Maternity Area of the hospital while keeping access to A&E and the maternity area live. The solution involved the construction of an extended glazed lobby at the A&E entrance with a covered queueing corridor to provide approximately 14 additional covered queueing points to facilitate screening and streaming of arrivals to A&E while protecting those queuing from the elements. The construction period was extremely short and Tom O’Brien Construction worked closely with the HSE and the design team to deliver the project on time on the 22nd of December. Malone O’Regan would like to thank all involved for their incredible efforts to deliver the project in such a short period of time and hope that the development is of great benefit to the Hospital during this extremely challenging time.
